Semester Begin and Forschungsworkshop
14 March - 18 March 2016
As an introduction to the masters program, ZHdK desgined a week long compact, intensive orientation for us to better formulate our project ideas and place them on the spectrum of design research and design practice. Tasks for the week included building a model as a representation of our project, planning and executing a conference, creating our "final" artifact in a day, and daily readings and reflections.
The background of the model represents the overall divorce rate - as it has in recent history remained constant or even slightly declined. The addition of a second line shows the the divorce rate for those over 50 is steadily increasing.
In front, two glasses hold water. One without carbonation and the other with. When the raisins (representing the children of the split parents) are dropped into the water, the ones in the calm water sink to the bottom. This exemplifies a population (children whos parents divorce when they are young) that we already know about - what has been „settled.“ The other raisins in the carbonated water, however, continued to rise and fall in an unsettled manner. The intention is to show that this population is underserved in the amount of research and attention that has been dedicated to the issue.
The knife and the fork represent tools in the „tool box“ of a designer. In the model, they are used to pull out and cut apart the raisins, this action demonstrating the use of design methods to contribute to further research on Adult Children of Divorce.
For my final artifact, I created an animation as the first in a series of self-help multimedia pieces for Adult Children suffering from the effects of their parents' divorce. Inspired by Headspace, an app that provides guided mediation, my audio/video series would be intended to address the range of issues that Adult Children deal with prior, during and after the divorce process. An element would specifically focus on expression and defining the types of feelings that come with this type of trauma and loss of personal history.
